MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Parks & Recreation Department and the Mansfield Fire Department teamed up again Thursday to help local youngsters (and people of all ages) to cool off during a week of 90-degree temperatures.

The event was at John Todd Park on Thursday, two days after a similar event was staged at Liberty Park, with about 50 children in attendance.

MFD Capt. Matt Shafley hooked up hoses to two nozzles developed by the department earlier this year to combat electrical vehicle fires. It’s a box with holes that allow water to spray upward toward a battery in an EV blaze.

As it turns out, the nozzle also is a great continuous sprinkler for kids, who also took advantage of ice-cold treats provided by the Parks & Rec Department.

Shafley also delighted the kids by taking a run through the sprinkler himself, as did 6th Ward Councilwoman Deborah Mount.

Public Works Director Louis Andres, Safety Services Director Keith Porch and Parks Supt. Mark Abrams were also on hand during the hour-long event that began at noon.

Andres said the city will consider other similar events in other city parks, depending on the weather. He also urged local residents to visit public splash pads at North Lake Park and Johns Park.
